Gift Card Scam Warning Signs — And How to Actually Avoid Them

Almost every gift-card seller in Nairobi, Lagos, Accra, or São Paulo has been scammed or come close. The scams follow five patterns. Once you can name them, you can dodge them — and the WePesa flow eliminates all five by design.

Pattern 1 — 'Send the code first, I'll pay after'

The oldest and most common. The buyer claims a policy that codes must be sent before payment "to confirm it works." The moment you send, they either redeem it themselves, or claim it's dead and refuse to pay. On WePesa, the code never touches a third party — it goes into an escrowed vault that only pays out when Amazon/Steam/Apple confirms the code is valid and unused.

Pattern 2 — 'Half now, half later'

The buyer pays half, you send the code, they never send the other half. Sometimes they'll drag it out for days claiming "bank issue" while your card sits in their inbox. WePesa's escrow is binary: either the full payout goes through or the card gets returned to you, immediately.

Pattern 3 — Fake payment screenshot

You get a screenshot of an M-Pesa or bank transfer that "will hit any minute." It never hits — the screenshot was faked in Photoshop or copied from an old transaction. Because WePesa is the counterparty (not another user), there's no screenshot game. The KES/NGN/BRL either lands in your account or the trade doesn't complete.

Pattern 4 — 'Wrong network' partial refund

Common with Amazon UK cards sold to a "buyer" claiming to need US. They pay you 30% of face value citing "cross-region loss," then resell the card at 82% and pocket the spread. WePesa's quote screen shows the exact rate for every region up front — no post-hoc downgrades.

Pattern 5 — Group-chat sniping

You post a card in a Telegram group. The first "buyer" DMs you, insists on speed, and starts pushing you to send. If you delay they threaten to blacklist you. All social pressure, zero recourse. On WePesa there's no group and no strangers — one flow, one company, one dispute inbox.

What WePesa's escrow actually does

  • Locks the card the moment you upload — nobody sees it until an automated verifier checks it against Amazon/Steam/Apple/Google APIs.
  • Freezes your quoted rate for 10 minutes so a market move can't be used as an excuse to renegotiate.
  • Runs a name-match on the destination M-Pesa / OPay / PIX / UPI account before releasing funds.
  • Retains a dispute trail: every quote, upload, and payout is timestamped for support.

If you get scammed elsewhere

File with your local cybercrime unit (DCI Kenya, EFCC Nigeria, CID Ghana). You almost certainly won't recover the card, but the report matters if the trader gets caught scaling. And close the WhatsApp/Telegram group you found them in — they will target you again through a second account.

Every trade escrow-protected. Every payout name-verified.
