Airtel Money Payout Integration

Beyond M-Pesa and MTN, Airtel Money is the wallet that covers Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi and rural Uganda. WePesa settles gift-card escrow straight into it, any hour.

You hold a Steam, Amazon or Apple card and your money lives on an Airtel line — in Lusaka, Dar es Salaam, Blantyre or upcountry Uganda. This is how that payout runs, market by market.

How it works

From gift card to settled payout.

  1. 01

    Lock the local quote

ZMW, TZS, MWK, UGX or KES — live FX plus the card's rate, locked for 10 minutes.

  2. 02

    Confirm the wallet name

We resolve the registered Airtel Money name for the number and show it. Wrong digit, wrong name, no payout.

  3. 03

    Disbursement fires

When the card clears escrow, an Airtel disbursement call sends the funds. The wallet SMS is your receipt.

Rail fees are absorbed by WePesa unless a row says otherwise. The quote you lock is the amount that settles.

Reliability

How we keep the rail up when the network isn't.

Per-market tier logic

Every Airtel market sets its own regulator-mandated wallet caps. We read the tier headroom for your market before quoting rather than failing at disbursement.

Weekend and night settlement

Mobile money doesn't keep banking hours. A Sunday-night trade pays out Sunday night.

Operator outage queueing

Airtel disbursement APIs have degraded windows. Payouts hold at the locked rate, retry automatically, and offer a bank fallback after two hours.

Agent-friendly amounts

Cashing out at an agent? The confirm screen can round to note-friendly amounts and keep the remainder in your WePesa balance.

For builders

Trigger payouts programmatically.

FAQ

What sellers ask about this rail.

Which Airtel market is fastest?+

Zambia and Uganda are the most consistent, typically inside two minutes. Malawi is slightly slower at peak.

Do you support Tigo Pesa in Tanzania?+

Yes — Tanzanian payouts can route to Airtel Money, Tigo Pesa or M-Pesa Tanzania.

Are wallet charges deducted from my payout?+

No. We pay the disbursement fee, so the locked amount is what your wallet shows.

What happens above my wallet's daily cap?+

We split the payout across transactions, or send the excess to a bank account rather than failing the trade.

Is M-Pesa better if I have both?+

In Kenya and Tanzania, yes — M-Pesa is marginally faster and has higher ceilings. Elsewhere Airtel Money is the stronger rail.
