MTN MoMo & Wallet Payout Integration

Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda and Cameroon run on mobile money. WePesa settles gift-card escrow straight to MTN MoMo, Vodafone Cash and AirtelTigo Money — nights and weekends included.

You're holding a Steam, Amazon or Apple card and you want Cedis (or Shillings, or Francs) on your MoMo line — spendable at an agent, on airtime, or on school fees today. Here's how that payout runs end to end.

How it works

From gift card to settled payout.

  1. 01

    Lock the local quote

GHS, UGX, RWF or XAF — live FX plus the card's rate, locked for 10 minutes.

  2. 02

    Confirm the MoMo name

We resolve the registered wallet name for the number and show it to you. Wrong digit, wrong name, no payout — the check runs before money moves.

  3. 03

    Disbursement fires

Once the card clears escrow, an MTN disbursement API call sends the funds. The MoMo SMS is your receipt.

Rail fees are absorbed by WePesa unless a row says otherwise. The quote you lock is the amount that settles.

Reliability

How we keep the rail up when the network isn't.

Wallet tier awareness

MoMo caps are set by the telco's KYC tier, not by us. We read your tier's headroom before quoting so you never see a payout fail for a limit you didn't know about.

Weekend settlement

Trades submitted Saturday night pay out Saturday night. Mobile money doesn't observe banking hours and neither does our disbursement queue.

Telco outage queueing

MTN disbursement APIs have degraded windows. Payouts hold at the locked rate and retry automatically — with a bank fallback offered after two hours.

Agent-ready amounts

If you're cashing out at an agent, the confirm screen can round your payout to a note-friendly amount and credit the remainder to your WePesa balance.

For builders

Trigger payouts programmatically.

FAQ

What sellers ask about this rail.

Which Ghanaian provider is fastest?+

MTN MoMo, consistently. Vodafone Cash and AirtelTigo settle in 1–3 minutes and are equally reliable, just marginally slower.

Are MoMo charges taken from my payout?+

No. We pay the disbursement fee — the locked amount is what your wallet shows.

Can I pay out to someone else's MoMo?+

Up to GHS 1,000, yes. Above that, the wallet name must match your WePesa profile — that rule is what keeps sellers from getting talked into paying a scammer's line.

Why did my payout arrive in two parts?+

Your wallet's KYC tier capped a single transaction. We split rather than fail, so you still get the full amount.

Do you support Uganda and Rwanda?+

Yes, both live with local-currency quotes. Cameroon (XAF) is live for verified sellers.
